AKRONAkron man robbed AKRON: An Akron man was robbed of $20 in cash and hundreds of dollars worth of jewelry early Wednesday morning, police said.The robbery took place about 2 a.m. while the 60-year-old victim was seated inside a 1995 Mercedes Benz parked outside a convenience store in the 300 block of East South Street. He told police two armed men wearing bandanas approached him and demanded he surrender his wallet and jewelry.According to the report, the gunmen took two silver necklaces, a silver bracelet, silver ring and silver watch, total value about $925. They also took car keys, a cell phone, credit card and the man’s wallet.Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490.Injured boy diesAKRON: A 16-year-old Canton boy who was injured during a physical altercation Sept. 4 has died.Joseph Hartley of Shorb Avenue Northwest died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at Akron Children’s Hospital. He had suffered head injuries during the altercation and was taken to the hospital, authorities said.The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office and Canton police are investigating the death. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.COLUMBUSHousing grantsCOLUMBUS: The Ohio Department of Development has approved more than $34.6 million in housing grants for 71 communities statewide through the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP).“The investments being made today will have a lasting impact on Ohio communities by improving the look of blighted homes and residents’ living conditions,” department director Christiane Schmenk said in a prepared statement. “These grants support vital housing repairs and improvements, improving entire neighborhoods.”The following Akron-area communities are receiving funding: Medina, $500,000; Streetsboro, $346,000; Portage County, $488,000; Wooster, $500,000; and Wayne County, $500,000.GREENRecycling effortGREEN: When Copley Township hosts its weeklong waste disposal project from Sept. 26 through Oct. 1, residents of Green and the rest of Summit County also are being invited.Green service director Randy Monteith said Copley officials opened the program to Green, which held a similar program earlier this year.Included in the project will be disposal of TVs with a $10 fee while computer monitors will be taken at no charge. Not accepted will be any appliances that contain freon.Hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Copley Community Center on Sunset Drive, adjacent to the Copley Police Department.NORTHEAST OHIOCanalway fundingThe Ohio & Erie Canalway Association is awarding $285,000 for six projects along the federally designated canalway.Federal funds will go to:• Village of Bolivar, $125,000 to construct one mile of the Towpath Trail.• Cleveland Rowing Foundation, $75,00 to develop a facility on the Cuyahoga River in the Flats area.• Barberton Historical Society, $35,000 to help restore O.C. Barber’s old Piggery Barn.• Fort Laurens State Memorial, $20,000 for restrooms along the Towpath Trail.• Massillon Area Greenways, $20,000 to connect the Sippo Valley Trail to the Towpath Trail in Massillon.• Metro Parks, Serving Summit County, $10,000 for interpretive signage at Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park in Peninsula along the Towpath Trail.The winning parties had to provide local matches that met or surpassed the federal funds.In all, Congress awarded $685,000 federal funds for the canalway. For more information, call 330-409-8096.Treasurer billedCANTON: Embattled Stark County Treasurer Gary Zeigler owes the county $1.86 million of the nearly $3 million embezzled during his nine years in office.Visiting Judge H.F. Inderlied Jr. issued a summary judgment recently in a case brought by county commissioners to recover the missing money. Zeigler’s former chief deputy, Vincent Frustaci, is serving a 10-year federal sentence because he admitted to stealing nearly $2.5 million.Inderlied said Zeigler owes the county nearly $1.7 million plus a 10 percent penalty.The county has recovered nearly $1.3 million from bonding companies and a bank that repaid the county $230,000 from checks Frustaci fraudulently cashed.Judge Inderlied said that Zeigler engaged in no wrongdoing himself and was not connected to the theft. He wrote that punitive damages were not appropriate because Zeigler did not act with “actual malice” in the loss of the money.Zeigler is expected to appeal the decision, which was issued Sept. 8.Employee issuesCANTON: Stark County commissioners on Wednesday accepted a fact-finder’s report covering collective bargaining issues for 911 operators.The report regarding the Stark County 911 Operators union, represented by the Fraternal Order of Police, does not address wages. It calls for no changes in vacation policy. The union sought vacation time for part-time and on-call employees. The report said the employees’ portion of medical insurance premiums should rise from 5 percent to 6 percent.The union has until Tuesday to act on the report. If the union accepts the report, it will become a contract. If not, the contract will be decided by binding arbitration.
